Timken Brand Bearings
In 1898, Henry Timken received a patent for the Tapered Roller Bearing developed for TIMKEN BEARING, and in 1899 St. Founded as Timken Roller Bearing Company in St. In 1901, as the auto industry began to overtake the transportation industry, the company moved to Canton, Ohio. Henry Timken and his two sons chose this location because of its proximity to the American auto manufacturing centers in Detroit and Cleveland, and the American steel manufacturing centers in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
In 1917, the company began steel and pipe manufacturing operations in Canton to vertically integrate and better control the steel used in its casting beds. The First World War created an increase in steel demand, affecting its supply and price in the market. Timken Bearings purchased rival The Torrington Company for $840 million in 2003, doubling the size of the company, making it the world's third-largest bearing manufacturer at the time.
Timken Bearing changed its corporate structure in 2014; By separating the roller bearing producing part of the company from the steel producing part of the company, two separate companies emerged. Timken Bearing continues to manufacture roller bearings, while Timken Steel continues to manufacture steel.
